Darryl Strawberry has two passions in life. One, trying to stop young people from using drugs, and two, finding a cure for cancer. Passion Number Two will take Darryl to Mohegan Sun Friday night for the 36th Annual Connecticut Cancer Foundation Awards Dinner.

“It’s a great cause and they have been doing it for a long time,” said Darryl. “This is something that’s especially close to my heart.”

Strawberry is a two-time colon cancer survivor so events like this are so important to him.

“It’s not easy when you find out you have cancer,” Strawberry added. “For me it was especially hard when it came back again. I found out one thing you can’t take anything for granted.”

The dinner was started in 1988 by the late Yankee catcher John Ellis and his wife Jane. John passed away two years ago this April from cancer.

“Because of my personal situation I am well aware of the havoc cancer can cause,” Darryl explained. “I just hope one day down the road we can find a way to put this awful disease to rest.”
