All baseball fans probably know of Whitey Herzog’s reputation as a Hall of Fame manager with the Royals and Cardinals. But what’s probably not so widely known, is how instrumental he was in building the 1969 World Championship Mets.

Whitey passed away today at 92, and his Mets family is sadden by his loss. He was a third base coach in 1966 for Wes Westrum, and for the next six years was our director of player development. Under his watch, young players like Gary Gentry, Wayne Garrett, John Milner, Amos Otis, and Ken Singleton made their way to Shea.

He left an indelible mark on our franchise. R.I.P. Whitey.
