The four were teammates and friends, and when Doug Flynn, Steve Henderson, Dan Norman and Pat Zachry were traded to the Mets on June 15, 1977 for the “The Franchise” Tom Seaver, they knew they faced an impossible task.

One member of the quartet, Zachry, passed away last night at the age of 71 in Waco, Texas, after a lengthy illness.

“None of us knew we could ever replace Tom,” said Flynn, “We just stuck together. You couldn’t find a better teammate than Zach. We will all miss him dearly.”

Zachry pitched for the Mets until 1982 and made the All-Star team in 1978 with a 10–6 record. His overall record in the majors in his 10-year career was 69–67 with a 3.52 ERA. He pitched for the Red, Mets, Dodgers and Phillies.

“Pat was a Rookie of the Year, All-Star, and World Series winner,” added Flynn. “He just had a great career.”
